Phase Change Material
Logistics TermsDefinition
Substances that absorb or release thermal energy during phase transitions (typically solid-liquid) to maintain a stable temperature environment inside insulated shipping containers. PCM packs are "conditioned" (pre-frozen or pre-cooled) before use, then placed around the cargo to provide passive temperature control for 24-96 hours depending on the formulation and container quality. Common PCM temperature ranges: +2-8°C (pharmaceuticals), -20°C (biologics), +15-25°C (CRT). In OBC logistics, PCM containers eliminate the need for active refrigeration and are approved for cabin carry-on.
