UN Number

Definition

A four-digit identification number used internationally to identify hazardous substances and articles in the framework of transport. UN numbers are assigned by the United Nations Committee of Experts on the Transport of Dangerous Goods and are used in all modes of transport (air, sea, road, rail). Examples: UN3481 (lithium ion batteries packed with equipment), UN3090 (lithium metal batteries), UN1993 (flammable liquid, n.o.s.). In time-critical logistics, the UN number must appear on the dangerous goods declaration and packaging labels.
