Definition

An internationally standardized system of names and numbers to classify traded products, developed and maintained by the World Customs Organization (WCO). The HS code hierarchy uses 6 digits globally, with countries adding further digits for national tariff and statistical purposes (8-10 digits in the EU, 10 digits in the US as the HTS code). Correct HS code classification is essential for determining duty rates, import restrictions, and trade agreement eligibility. In time-critical logistics, misclassification can cause customs delays that negate the speed advantage of OBC/NFO services.
